Description
The
Yukon,
formerly called the Yukon Territory is the smallest and westernmost of Canada’s three territories.
It is also the least populated in Canada, with a population of 35,874 people as of the 2016 census with Whitehorse, the largest territorial capital of any of the three (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) .
L
ong before the arrival of Europeans, central and southern Yukon was populated by First Nations People, and s
ites of archeological significance hold some of the earliest evidence of the presence of human habitation in North America.
Coastal and inland First Nations had extensive trading networks.
E
uropean incursions into the area began early in the 19
th
century with fur trade, followed by missionaries.
By the 1870s ad 80s, gold miners began to arrive.
This drove a population increase that justified the establishment of a police force, just in time of the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897.
The increased population coming with the gold rush led to the separation of the Yukon district from the Northwest Territories and the formation of the separate Yukon Territory in 1898.
D
awson
was founded by Joseph Ladue and named in 1897.
It served as Yukon’s capital from the territory’s until 1952, when the seat was moved to Whitehorse.
Dawson was the center of the Klondike Gold Rush which began in 1896 and changed the First Nations camp into a thriving city of 40,000 by 1898 but by the end of the gold rush in 1899, the town’s population plummeted as all but 8,000 people left.
Dawson was incorporated as a city in 1902, with a population under 5,000.
T
his card was published shortly after incorporation by "
Shuling & Koehn Co
"., who published regional view cards in Chicago between 1904 and 1912.
The card captures an early look at “King Street looking West” made for "
Zaccarelli’s Fruit, Book, & Stationary Store
” in Dawson.
It is in good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear image and reverse.
The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.
