If you're a fan of the 1920s and '30's classic cinema, you'll be very familiar with this stellar Pre-Code FANTASY film starring the legendary screen actor, Fredric March. It's a real standout production as it's
one of the only
fantasy films released during the 1930s. Let's face it; if you're an advanced collector of vintage depression era paper you already know how hard it is to find any advertising material related to the fantasy genre. That's because Hollywood made almost NO fantasy films prior to 1950. The studios produced plenty of horror films, and a few science fiction features and some serials, but in the realm of fantasy - you find very little. Happily, this feature is a notable exception. Unfortunately, paper from this classic is practically NON EXISTENT, with less than a handful of original posters known to exist. This special advance window poster is the only known original to have survived. It's got a terrific image of what looks now to be an ancient jalopy. Back in 1934, when this poster was originally released, that car was as modern as they get. I find that fact to be a more than interesting element that dates this 85-year-old artifact with visual delight.
Fredric March won the Academy Award for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde just 11 months prior to the release of Death Takes A Holiday, and so Paramount Pictures really went all out to promote this vehicle for him. They created this special poster size and format just for this film! The size of this original is 16 and a half by 11 inches. They promoted these new "teaser" posters in the
front
section of the original campaign book. I've posted a photo of that original page in this listing for reference (see photo #3). Additionally, Paramount promoted these posters by directly sending samples to the theater managers who booked the film. That's where this surviving original came from. Paramount sent a letter with one single poster example folded in an envelope to the theater. I have the original 1934 dated letter, and I'm including it in this lot (see photo #2). It's an amazing document that defines some of the following facts about this 1-of-a-kind poster:
1 - The studio itself produced and distributed the poster.
2 - The poster was designed as a "TEASER."
3 - The poster was also designed as an "ADVANCE."
4 - Paramount produced a "LIMITED" quantity
5 - The poster is called a "WINDOW POSTER."
That's not to be confused with a window card, as this is NOT printed on card stock, it's printed on regular poster paper similar to that of a one-sheet. The theater manager saved the poster and the letter. The poster is in its ORIGINAL UNRESTORED CONDITION. I've posted high-resolution photos here on eBay. They leave nothing to the imagination. As you can see the poster is in very fine condition. The poster will be shipped flat with the letter. If you're into collecting important Hollywood or classic posters this is a MUST!
